Ovarian Abnormalities Q&A

What are ovarian abnormalities?

Ovarian abnormalities describe conditions that affect your ovaries, small almond-shaped organs that sit on each side of your uterus.

The ovaries are responsible for producing, storing, and releasing eggs for fertilization by sperm. Your ovaries also make reproductive hormones — estrogen and progesterone — that regulate your periods and  many of your biological functions. Dysfunction in the ovaries can lead to infertility and other complications.

Common ovarian abnormalities include:

Ovarian cysts

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or in an ovary during ovulation.

Ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer develops when abnormal cells in the ovaries multiply rapidly and form a tumor.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS occurs when your ovaries produce too many male hormones, which causes cysts to form on the organs. PCOS can lead to irregular periods, infertility, and excessive facial hair growth. You may also be at higher risk for high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease, and diabetes.

Premature ovarian failure

Premature ovarian failure occurs when the ovaries stop working properly before a woman reaches age 40.

When should I seek medical care for ovarian abnormalities?

Schedule a diagnostic evaluation at Eveskare if you have symptoms of ovarian abnormalities such as:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Excessive facial or body hair growth

Dr. Panchamukhi completes a pelvic exam and may order blood tests to check your hormone levels. She also offers vaginal ultrasounds and other diagnostic imaging tests to identify cysts, cancerous tissue, and other ovarian abnormalities.

How are ovarian abnormalities treated?

Eveskare offers evidence-based treatments to manage symptoms of ovarian abnormalities and protect your reproductive health.

Dr. Panchamukhi may prescribe hormonal birth control to ease pain and other symptoms of ovarian cysts and PCOS. She may also recommend other medications to manage pelvic and abdominal pain.

If you have large cysts, Dr. Panchamukhi can perform a minimally invasive procedure to remove them. She also offers surgery to take tissue samples from your ovaries to test for cancer and can remove suspicious or cancerous growths.

Women with premature ovarian failure may benefit from hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if they experience hot flashes, anxiety, brain fog, and other menopause symptoms.
